New Excel Add-ins for Marketers

This year, Microsoft updated its spreadsheet tool, Excel, making it more functional for its users. Complex tasks are easier to perform in Excel 2013, due to tools like Recommended Charts and Recommended PivotTables tools. New add-ins were built to plug into Excel, including PowerPivot, PowerView, and Excellent Analytics. These add-ins can help you harness the power of your data quickly and save time.

PowerPivot is an authoring tool that allows you to create PowerPivot data in your Excel workbooks. It lets you import, filter, and sort many millions of rows of data, far beyond the one million row limit in Excel. More importantly, you have the ability to build relationships between data that is from completely different data sources by mapping columns that contain similar data. PowerPivot enables you to find better information and insights into the numbers that will drive more efficient marketing decisions and objectives.

Another data visualization add-in that Excel now offers is PowerView. PowerView enables quick and easy visualization of your data while allowing sharing and collaboration of business insights. You can use PowerView to perform dynamic and interactive time series analysis, visualize and interact with data in new ways, and compare your data with trellis charts (a layout of smaller charts in a grid with consistent scales).

These add-ins, when paired together, allow marketers to sift and visualize big data. Another add-in Excel offers makes it easier for you to share, visualize, and mine in to web analytics data. Excellent Analytics lets you pull Google Analytics data directly into Excel. It is a simple plugin for Excel that lets you import web analytics data from Google Analytics and use it in your spreadsheets. You have the ability to build queries with dimensions, metrics, and filters, combine data from multiple data sources in a single spreadsheet, build dashboards, and define and calculate customized KPI’s.

Data captured will do no good if marketers can’t interpret it quickly and efficiently. Combining these Excel add-ins allows marketers to store user activity for actionable intelligence and insights.
