Nina Hale, Inc. recently brought on Jake McCormick, our new Search Marketing Manager. Jake comes to us from Milwaukee well-versed in SEO and with a background in sports blogging. We are so excited to have him as a part of the NHI team!
1) What is your educational background?
I graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism (major) and political science (minor). I also spent three and a half years at the student newspaper, holding the positions of Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief over my final two semesters.
2) What led you to Search Marketing?
I actually got my start in search marketing as a sports blogger. I’m always up for a challenging puzzle, and search marketing is nothing if not a constantly changing industry that requires the ability to adjust and adapt to new concepts quickly. The industry kind of weeds out the weaker parts of the herd if they can’t keep up, so it adds a little extra motivation to stay on top of industry news and events.
3) What are some of your hobbies/ What do you do in your free time?
I’ve been covering the Milwaukee Bucks for five years now (on three different websites), and actually had media credentials for all home games until I moved to the Twin Cities. Otherwise, I spend my free time playing video games, watching sports, reading a lot (having a Kindle Fire does that), playing guitar, making beer, cooking/eating, and working out. Pretty much everything you’d see in an online dating profile casting a really wide net, minus the part about being single.
4) What’s you favorite part about NHI thus far?
It’s been less than a week and I already feel comfortable enough to be myself around everyone. A lot of the standards and practices we follow are parallel to my previous agency, so I’m feeling pretty good about the learning curve and contributing right away. The coffee/espresso machine and being downtown are nice perks, but that’s self-explanatory I think.
5) We know you just moved to Minnesota. What are you most excited about living here? What are you least excited about?
I’m most excited about exploring the Cities’ bar and food scene. My wife is from the area, and we got married at the Science Museum of Minnesota last October, but I’ve only scratched the surface of what the Cities have to offer in regards to cuisine and microbrews.
I’m least excited about having to go to a bar to watch the Packers game every Sunday, but I accepted that long before we moved west of the Mississippi.
6) If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I’m a water person, and I’ve already been to Hawaii, but I would go back in a heartbeat. It’s expensive, but the seafood, scenery, place in U.S. history, and overall laid back atmosphere are unbeatable.
7) Do you have a favorite band?
I have many, mostly split out by genre, which is probably annoying (I do this for movies and television, too). If I had to pick one it would be a band called Every Time I Die. They’re (predictably by the name) a metal band with a really, really smart lyricist that works in a lot of literary references to his songs.
8) What special qualities are you bringing to NHI?
I have a good sense of humor (or so I think) and always carry an open mind when confronted with a problem in need of a solution. I’ve also worked in pretty much every area of SEO imaginable, so I feel like I can contribute to the team on multiple levels.
9) Anything else you’d like to share?
I whistle songs a lot. Like, a lot. And I’m very non sequitur in conversation.
