‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ Becomes the Victim of Promoted Trend Trolling on Twitter

The highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 releases to the masses today and is projected to be one of the biggest video game sellers of the year.

In casual gamer conversation, it’s referred to as “GTA,” or in the case of this fifth installment in the franchise, “GTAV.” Whilst perusing Twitter just now I saw something interesting; the Promoted Trend of the day is the hashtag #GATV, via competing video game franchise Saints Row, in an apparent attempt to troll the big release day for GTA (see below).

Now, trolling release days for anticipated products and announcements is nothing new. Samsung and Windows Phone ran extensive Promoted Tweet campaigns during last week’s Apple iPhone 5S event. But to blatantly mock and intentionally create confusion with what the correct hashtag is for a competitor, is bold…and brilliant.
