Congratulations to Joel Swaney! Just before the holidays, Joel was promoted to Associate Director of Technical SEO.
How did you get involved with digital media?
My background is in software development, and I moved from that into the web as a business analyst. Then, SEO became a catchphrase, and I ended up becoming the SEO go-to person for my employer at the time.
What other experience do you have in web management?
I was the live archivist for Ryan Adams and ran RyanAdamsArchive.com for 8 years. I cataloged all of Ryan’s live shows and also managed a forum for Ryan Adams fans where the shows were distributed. The site was one of the top search results on Google for years, and I gained a lot of experience in running all parts of the website — community management, content, SEO, all of that.
How did you connect with Nina Hale, Inc.?
I worked with Nina for several years at my old position, so when the technical SEO position came up in spring of 2012, I applied, and we both knew it was a good fit.
What does your day-to-day job look like?
I oversee the technical SEO portion of the agency. The technical department is the knowledge center for the SEO algorithms, so I also spend time educating staff and managing the SEO department. I perform technical SEO audits to ensure our clients’ websites are running as smoothly as possible. I also define strategy for both clients and the agency, and also help with scoping for client projects.
What do you love about your job?
I’ve always loved engineering type things, and I’m a natural debugger. Finding issues is really easy for me, and I like to help clients fix them and prevent them in the future. Also, following how something changes is really exciting; what matters for search has changed a lot in the past few years, and it’s important to stay on top of that.
