Five Lessons from the Geek Girls

I had the pleasure of attending yesterday’s MN American Marketing Association event with a few other folks from NHI. The Geek Girls Guide duo, Nancy Lyons and Meghan Wilker, gave us some of their insight on the digital world. Here’s a quick recap: Traditional processes produce traditional results. For digital marketing, find a process that balances rigor and agility. We aren’t Don Draper. Clients and agencies alike need to bring their creative thinking caps to the table. Active collaboration is key. The good, the bad and the ugly. Good news and bad news need to be shared with your client at the same velocity. (Make sure your “Minnesota nice” doesn’t get in the way.) Stop being a control freak. Marketing is controlling the consumer experience, making sure it is consistent. In the world of digital marketing, the reality is we can’t control every experience. Our audience could be on a multitude of devices; it is our job to make sure they find what they are looking for. Kill the bugs. When in the digital world, expect bugs; it comes with the territory. How you handle the bugs is what differentiates your agency from the next guy. Fix (or kill) the bugs and move on.
