There’s a notable lack of higher education curriculum focused on some of the more sophisticated facets of digital marketing, particularly measurement, media buying and integrated strategy. So, being on the Board for both i612 and Ad Fed MN, I saw a great opportunity to provide students and recent grads with some insight into the actual titles, responsibilities and overall opportunities in the digital industry.
Tapping into Ad2 MN‘s substantial student network was crucial to bringing this event to life and reaching this curious young audience. Thus, Tuesday night was the inaugural i612/Ad2 MN Working in Digital Marketing: The Preview, an event that brought established, local digital players together with those looking to break into the industry. The event was sponsored and hosted by Periscope.
Over 100 students, recent grads and freelancers participated in an intimate, speed dating-style round-table Q&A. Local agency and corporate digital professionals fielded questions, and attempted to drop knowledge on exactly what they do and how they got where they are. Compass Point; Carmichael Lynch; Capella University; Nina Hale, Inc.; Space 150; Gabriel deGrood Bendt and FRWD sent representatives from a diverse and wide variety of disciplines including analytics, social media, producing, creative and media. I spoke about social media marketing, and Lizzy Wilkins got kids stoked about measurement.
It was a really great event. The attendees were very engaged and curious about how they can further their careers in this lovely industry of digital. The students echoed my sentiments (above) about the current lack of curriculum focused on more of the sophisticated aspects of digital marketing, yearning for tips on how to better themselves individually to stand out from the competition. Good stuff. Looking forward to seeing how the event grows next year.
