The Olympics have dominated the news this past week, with the best athletes in the world competing for the ultimate symbol of success – the Gold medal. Taking the Silver or Bronze medal represents being 2nd or 3rd best in the world for a given sport. All the athletes have worked hard and endured so much to represent their countries – you want them all to win but there are only three medals.
Though you can hardly compare the effort it takes to qualify for the Olympics with search engine optimization (SEO) and top rankings, it “feels” like there are similarities.
You’ve made the SEO Olympics when those really competitive keywords rank on the second page of Google’s search results – yes, you’re in the game – and with a bit more work the podium is in sight. [sigh] Getting on the first page of search results is like winning the “finals competition” which allows you to compete for the Gold. And getting the coveted Google rankings of 1, 2, or 3 is like winning Gold, Silver, or Bronze!
The Olympics will be over in a few days, but your optimization efforts should be long term.
